Outer tie rod end for 1983-1996 Chevrolet and GMC trucks and SUVs designed to connect the steering rack to the steering knuckle, ensuring precise steering control and safe vehicle handling. This replacement outer tie rod end restores proper alignment and steering feel by securely fastening the steering linkage, reducing play, and helping prevent uneven tire wear. Built for durability and reliability, it is suitable for restoration, maintenance, or routine suspension repairs and is available for either right-hand or left-hand application depending on vehicle side.
Features:
- Fitment: Direct replacement for 1983-1996 Chevrolet and GMC trucks and SUVs (outer tie rod end, right or left hand applications).
- Durable construction with corrosion-resistant finish for long service life in road conditions.
- Replaces worn or damaged outer tie rod ends to restore steering precision and reduce play.
- Helps prevent uneven tire wear and improves alignment retention after steering or suspension service.
- Includes sealed ball joint design to retain grease and reduce maintenance; straightforward installation for mechanics and DIYers.
Installation / Application:
- Difficulty: 3/5
- Estimated time: 45-90 minutes per side
Instructions:
- Park on a level surface, engage parking brake, and chock rear wheels. Loosen front wheel lug nuts slightly.
- Raise vehicle with jack and support securely on jack stands. Remove wheel to access tie rod end.
- Locate the outer tie rod end at the steering knuckle. Use a marker to note the current position or count the number of exposed threads to preserve alignment during removal.
- Loosen the jam nut on the inner tie rod sleeve that secures the outer tie rod end.
- Remove the cotter pin and loosen the castle nut (or retaining nut) on the outer tie rod stud. Do not fully remove the nut yet if using a puller.
- Separate the tie rod end from the steering knuckle using a tie rod puller or a pickle fork and a hammer. Once separated, remove the retaining nut and unscrew the outer tie rod end from the inner tie rod.
- Compare new part to old for fit and thread direction. Thread the new outer tie rod end onto the inner tie rod to approximately the same position noted earlier to maintain alignment.
- Insert the tie rod stud into the steering knuckle and tighten the castle nut to the vehicle manufacturer’s specified torque. Install a new cotter pin if required.
- Tighten the jam nut against the outer tie rod end to secure its position. If the tie rod has a grease fitting, apply grease per instructions.
- Reinstall the wheel, lower the vehicle, and torque the wheel lug nuts to specification.
- Have a professional wheel alignment performed immediately after installation to ensure proper steering geometry and tire wear.
