1973-1991 Chevy Truck Left Hand Tailgate Post Repair restores the original mounting point for the left-side tailgate post, securing the tailgate and correcting alignment for smooth operation. Constructed from heavy-gauge steel and finished for corrosion resistance, this repair section replaces rusted or damaged sheet metal to provide a durable, reliable foundation for hinge hardware. Ideal for restoration and rust-repair projects, it delivers OEM-style fit and long-term durability while simplifying reinstallation and adjustment of the tailgate.
Features:
  • Fits 1973-1991 Chevrolet C/K series pickup trucks — left-hand (driver side) tailgate post repair.
  • Precision-formed heavy-gauge steel reproduces original mounting geometry for proper hinge alignment.
  • Corrosion-resistant finish and robust material extend service life and resist future rust.
  • Restores structural support to prevent tailgate sagging and reduce wear on hinges and latches.
  • Designed for restoration and rust-repair applications; welds or mechanically fastens into place for a secure installation.
  • Direct replacement section for worn or damaged posts — improves safety and preserving value of classic trucks.
Installation / Application:
  • Difficulty: 3/5
  • Estimated time: 1-3 hours (depending on rust severity and welding experience)
Suggested Tools:
  • Basic hand tools (socket set, wrenches, screwdrivers)
  • Angle grinder with cut-off and grinding discs
  • Drill and metal drill bits
  • Welder (MIG/TIG) or plug-rivet gun and self-tapping fasteners
  • Clamps and metal straightedge
  • Rust converter, primer and paint or seam sealer
  • Protective gear (gloves, eye protection, welding helmet)
Instructions:
  1. Prepare vehicle: park on a level surface, disconnect battery if welding, and remove the tailgate and any hinge hardware to expose the post area.
  2. Assess damage and mark removal area: Identify corroded or damaged metal and mark a clean cut line that leaves solid surrounding metal for welding or fastening.
  3. Remove old metal: cut away the damaged post section with an angle grinder. Clean surrounding metal of rust, paint, and contaminants down to bare metal.
  4. Test-fit the repair section: position the new left-hand tailgate post repair piece and ensure it aligns with hinge mounting points and body seams. Trim as necessary for an exact fit.
  5. Secure and join: clamp the repair piece in place. If welding, tack-weld at multiple points, then complete welds using appropriate technique and heat control to avoid warping. If not welding, use plug rivets or mechanical fasteners as needed, ensuring a tight, gap-free fit.
  6. Finish seams and protect: grind welds smooth, apply seam sealer to all joints, then prime and paint the repaired area to prevent corrosion.
  7. Reassemble: reinstall hinge hardware and the tailgate, adjust hinge alignment and latch engagement for proper operation, and test tailgate opening/closing.
  8. Final check: inspect welds/fasteners, ensure smooth operation and that there is no binding or excess play in the hinge. Touch up paint and reapply underbody protection as needed.
