Instructions:
- Securely lift and support the vehicle on jack stands and remove the front wheel on the side to be serviced.
- Loosen the jam nut on the outer tie rod and mark the position of the tie rod on the threaded section to preserve alignment.
- Apply penetrating oil to the inner tie rod connection and outer tie rod end stud if corroded.
- Remove the outer tie rod end from the steering knuckle using a tie rod removal tool or pickle fork, taking care not to damage boot or threads.
- Unthread and remove the outer tie rod from the inner tie rod, counting or measuring turns to maintain alignment reference.
- Unthread the inner tie rod from the steering rack or drag link; use appropriate tools and support the assembly to avoid damage.
- Install the new inner tie rod hand-tight into the rack, then torque to the manufacturer’s specification.
- Re-attach the outer tie rod to the newly installed inner tie rod using the measured turns to approximate original alignment, and tighten the jam nut.
- Reconnect the outer tie rod to the steering knuckle and torque the nut to spec, then install cotter pin if applicable.
- Reinstall the wheel, lower the vehicle, and perform a professional wheel alignment to ensure correct steering geometry and tire wear.
