Installation / Application:
  • Difficulty: 3/5
  • Estimated time: 45-90 minutes per side
Suggested Tools:
  • Jack and jack stands
  • Wheel chocks
  • Wrench set
  • Socket set
  • Tie rod end puller or pickle fork
  • Torque wrench
  • Pliers
  • Penetrating oil
  • Hammer
  • Marker or paint pen
  • Grease (if applicable)
Instructions:
  1. Park on a level surface, engage parking brake, and place wheel chocks behind rear wheels.
  2. Loosen the front wheel lug nuts slightly, then raise the vehicle with a jack and support securely on jack stands.
  3. Remove the front wheel to access the tie rod end and steering knuckle.
  4. Locate the outer tie rod end and mark the position of the threaded portion against the inner tie rod or measure the number of turns to preserve alignment.
  5. Apply penetrating oil to the tie rod end jam nut and lower ball stud, then loosen and back off the jam nut.
  6. Separate the tie rod end from the steering knuckle using a tie rod puller or a pickle fork; a few taps with a hammer may be necessary to release the tapered stud.
  7. Unscrew the old tie rod end from the inner tie rod to the marked position (or the same number of turns previously recorded) and remove it.
  8. Thread the new tie rod end onto the inner tie rod to the marked position, ensuring right/left hand orientation is correct.
  9. Insert the tie rod end stud into the steering knuckle and install the castle nut or retaining nut; torque to manufacturer specification and install cotter pin if applicable.
  10. Tighten the tie rod jam nut against the new tie rod end to secure the setting.
  11. If the new unit has a grease fitting, apply grease per product instructions; otherwise ensure threads and seals are clean.
  12. Reinstall the wheel, lower the vehicle, and torque lug nuts to specification.
  13. Have a professional wheel alignment performed immediately after installation to ensure proper steering geometry and tire wear.
