Instructions:
- Park on a level surface, engage parking brake, and place wheel chocks behind rear wheels.
- Loosen the front wheel lug nuts slightly, then raise the vehicle with a jack and support securely on jack stands.
- Remove the front wheel to access the tie rod end and steering knuckle.
- Locate the outer tie rod end and mark the position of the threaded portion against the inner tie rod or measure the number of turns to preserve alignment.
- Apply penetrating oil to the tie rod end jam nut and lower ball stud, then loosen and back off the jam nut.
- Separate the tie rod end from the steering knuckle using a tie rod puller or a pickle fork; a few taps with a hammer may be necessary to release the tapered stud.
- Unscrew the old tie rod end from the inner tie rod to the marked position (or the same number of turns previously recorded) and remove it.
- Thread the new tie rod end onto the inner tie rod to the marked position, ensuring right/left hand orientation is correct.
- Insert the tie rod end stud into the steering knuckle and install the castle nut or retaining nut; torque to manufacturer specification and install cotter pin if applicable.
- Tighten the tie rod jam nut against the new tie rod end to secure the setting.
- If the new unit has a grease fitting, apply grease per product instructions; otherwise ensure threads and seals are clean.
- Reinstall the wheel, lower the vehicle, and torque lug nuts to specification.
- Have a professional wheel alignment performed immediately after installation to ensure proper steering geometry and tire wear.
