Instructions:
- Park on level ground, engage parking brake, and chock rear wheels. Loosen the front wheel lug nuts slightly.
- Raise the vehicle with a jack and secure on jack stands. Remove the front wheel to access the tie rod assembly.
- Locate the outer left tie rod end at the steering knuckle. Loosen but do not remove the jam nut at the inner tie rod unless replacement requires measuring.
- Record the length or count the turns required to remove the tie rod end to preserve approximate alignment, or measure from a fixed point for reference.
- Remove the cotter pin (if present) and loosen the castle nut or nut securing the tie rod end to the steering knuckle.
- Use a tie rod end puller or a pickle fork to separate the tie rod end from the steering knuckle. A sharp tap with a hammer to the knuckle may help release it.
- Unscrew the tie rod end from the inner tie rod the recorded number of turns to maintain alignment. Remove the old part.
- Thread the new outer left tie rod end onto the inner tie rod the same number of turns as removed. If the part is greaseable, apply grease through the fitting.
- Insert the tie rod end stud into the steering knuckle and hand-tighten the nut. Torque to the vehicle manufacturer’s specification and install a new cotter pin if required.
- Tighten the jam nut against the tie rod end to secure the assembly.
- Reinstall the wheel, lower the vehicle, torque the wheel lug nuts to spec, and perform a safety check.
- Because turning angles may change slightly during replacement, have a professional wheel alignment performed to ensure proper toe settings and prevent uneven tire wear.
