Outer tie rod end (right / left hand) designed to replace worn or damaged steering linkage on a broad range of GM vehicles from 1977–2005, including Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, GMC, Oldsmobile, and Pontiac models. This component secures the steering rack to the steering knuckle, translating steering input into wheel movement while maintaining alignment and minimizing play. Built for reliable fitment and long service life, it restores precise steering feel, reduces vibration and uneven tire wear, and is suitable for restoration, maintenance, or performance-oriented rebuilds.
Features:
- Fitment: Designed for 1977–2005 Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, GMC, Oldsmobile, and Pontiac models (outer tie rod end, right/left hand)
- Durable construction: hardened stud and corrosion-resistant finish for long life
- Function: secures the steering rack to the steering knuckle to maintain alignment and steering precision
- Reduces play and vibration: restores proper steering response and helps prevent uneven tire wear
- Easy replacement: direct-fit OE-style design for straightforward installation during repairs or restorations
- Application: suitable for routine maintenance, collision repair, and classic car restoration projects
Installation / Application:
- Difficulty: 3/5
- Estimated time: 45-90 minutes per side
Instructions:
- Park vehicle on level ground, engage parking brake, loosen front wheel lug nuts slightly.
- Raise vehicle with floor jack and secure on jack stands. Remove the wheel to access the tie rod end.
- Locate the outer tie rod end at the steering knuckle. Apply penetrating oil to the jam nut and castle nut if rusted.
- Mark or measure the distance from a fixed point on the inner tie rod to the end of the outer tie rod (or count steering rack turns) to preserve alignment.
- Loosen the jam nut that secures the tie rod end to the inner tie rod, then remove the cotter pin (if present) and loosen the castle nut on the tie rod stud.
- Separate the tie rod end from the steering knuckle using a tie rod end puller, pickle fork, or ball joint separator, taking care not to damage adjacent components.
- Unscrew the outer tie rod end from the inner tie rod the same number of turns measured earlier (to keep alignment close). Remove the old part.
- Thread the replacement outer tie rod end onto the inner tie rod to the measured position, tighten the jam nut to secure it, and insert the stud into the steering knuckle.
- Install and torque the castle nut to manufacturer specification, secure with a new cotter pin if applicable. Apply grease if the replacement has a grease fitting.
- Reinstall the wheel, lower the vehicle, and torque wheel lug nuts to spec.
- Have a professional wheel alignment performed as soon as possible after replacement to ensure correct toe settings and prevent tire wear.
