This replacement idler arm fits 1985–1990 Chevrolet and GMC pickup and SUV steering systems and restores proper steering geometry by supporting the center link and maintaining correct alignment. Designed as a direct-fit steering component, it secures the passenger-side of the center link, reduces steering play and vibration, and helps prevent premature tire wear. Constructed for durability and dependable performance, this idler arm provides a reliable restoration option for worn or loose steering linkage on older Chevy and GMC trucks and SUVs.
Features:
- Fits 1985-1990 Chevrolet and GMC trucks and SUVs (direct-fit for stock steering systems).
- Heavy-duty steel construction for long-lasting strength and resistance to wear.
- Restores steering stability by securing the center link and reducing play and vibration.
- Greaseable design (where applicable) for easier maintenance and extended service life.
- Direct-replacement part ideal for restoration, suspension repair, or routine maintenance.
- Corrosion-resistant finish to withstand road exposure and extend component life.
Installation / Application:
- Difficulty: 2/5
- Estimated time: 30-60 minutes
Instructions:
- Park on a level surface, engage parking brake and chock rear wheels; loosen front lug nuts slightly.
- Raise the vehicle and secure it on jack stands; remove the front wheel on the passenger side for access.
- Locate the idler arm on the frame rail connected to the center link. Remove any cotter pin or retaining clip from the idler arm stud.
- Use a socket/wrench to remove the nut from the idler arm stud. If the stud is tight in the center link, use a puller to separate the joint.
- Unbolt the idler arm mounting bolts from the frame. Support the center link as needed to prevent undue stress on other steering components.
- Remove the old idler arm and compare it to the replacement to confirm correct orientation and fit.
- Position the new idler arm and hand-thread the mounting bolts. Reattach the idler arm stud to the center link and tighten the nut to the vehicle manufacturer’s specified torque.
- Torque the mounting bolts to specification with a torque wrench. Install a new cotter pin or retaining clip where applicable.
- If the new idler arm has a grease fitting, apply grease using a grease gun until fresh grease appears at the joint. Reinstall the wheel and lower the vehicle.
- Tighten lug nuts to specification, perform a visual check for proper installation, and take the vehicle for a short test drive to confirm steering response. Have a professional alignment performed if steering pull or uneven tire wear is present.
